I left a key piece out of my chronology below on all about the end. Wednesday, the day she was admitted to the hospital, we had the staff call priests on call, and Father Daley (I hope I'm remembering his name correctly) came that evening to administer Extreme Unction. Vaiva was alert, recognized him as a priest, understood she was receiving the sacrament, I believe.
The next day I learned from the chaplain that it's not customarily called Extreme Unction or the last rites any more, rather it is the sacrament of the sick. Elderly people receive the sacrament a couple times each year, not only when death is near. Okay, I did not know that.
