I am sending two photos (of many that I have)of Vaiva. One was taken around 10 years ago, in summer when I was visiting Lithuania and we went to your home there. I like the photo so much because it reminds me of her the most, the way in which she would smile Mona Lisa-like. The second photo is of her in Lithuania at the first or second APPLE conference. I had brought a poster that had a great big apple, but the words seemed to make sense, too. I asked her to do the honor of presenting and translating the text, not a small job if you think that this was the first impression we were going to make on the Lithuanians. Best,

ReplyDeleteThe Simpson family extends its condolences and will keep all of you in our prayers. It struck me that an Old Testament hymn, A Woman of Valor, was especially appropriate for remembering Vaiva. It’s a Jewish custom for men to recite this hymn at the end of the week, to think about and be thankful for all his wife has done for him and their family throughout the past week. Here’s an excerpt:
An accomplished woman, who can find? Her value is far beyond pearls.
Her husband's heart relies on her and he shall lack no fortune.
She does him good and not evil, all the days of her life.
.***
Strength and honor are her clothing, she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the lesson of kindness is on her tongue.
She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise and praise her, her husband lauds her.
Many women have done worthily, but you surpass them all.
Charm is deceptive and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears God shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
