This is it, the final lap, the sprint to the finish line.
The time for the United States to extend formal diplomatic recognition to the Landsbergis government is right now, today. The forces of democracy are ascendant, the republics are coming into their own, and the Baltic states will be free and independent.
Boris Yeltsin agrees, he has already said so. The only man dragging his feet is one George Bush. We have to prod him right now, to get him to stop trying to swim against the tide of history.
Write or call President Bush, Senator Dodd, Senator Lieberman, and your Congressman telling them that the waiting must be ended, the time to extend formal diplomatic recognition to the Baltic states is now.
If you wish, the Lithuanian American Council has created a simple mechanism for you to express your views.
Just call Western Union at 1-800-325-6000 and ask for Hotline Number 9922.
You will be asked for your name and address and the names of the persons you wish to have telegrams sent to. You will be billed $6.75 for the first message, $3.00 for each subsequent message. The text of the Hotline telegram is: “We urge you to support the democratically elected government of Lithuania, and the restoration of Lithuania’s independence. Don’t allow Lithuania’s fight for democracy and human rights die. These are the same principles that America fought for. Recognize the Landsbergis government now.”
