Ain't no sunshine when she's gone

Lokys and I have been watching American Idol this season. In the final performance, Kris Allen (who would go on to win) did an excellent job with a song that has special meaning to me, Ain't no sunshine when she's gone.

I gave Vaiva an iPod nano as a Christmas present in 2006, and on the back is engraved "Vaiva: Ain't no sunshine when she's gone. . ." Among the performances I loaded on the iPod was Bobby "Blue" Bland performing that song. (This performance by Bill Withers is comparable.) At that time, Vaiva still was alternating, a month in Vilnius and a month in Durham, so my maximum sunshine was six months of each year.

Here is Vaiva opening the present.

She was surprised by the gift, but hasn't seen the engraving yet. Our tree is in the background, and the kisielius and aguono pienas are still on the dining room table.

Here are the lyrics:

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone.
It's not warm when she's away.
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long anytime she goes away.

Wonder this time where she's gone,
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home anytime she goes away.

And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know

Hey, I ought to leave the young thing alone,
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone, only darkness everyday.
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone,
And this house just ain't no home anytime she goes away.

Anytime she goes away.
Anytime she goes away.
Anytime she goes away.
Anytime she goes away.
