It has been over 20 years since Lithuania declared its independence from the USSR, and nearly 20 years since the world recognized that status, so that genuine freedom was restored to Lithuania. Few Americans today understand how awful the Russian occupation of Lithuania was, how toxic communism truly was (and is).
With independence restored, Lithuania needed a "never again" plan. Economic, political and military infrastructure was put into place to make a Russian reoccupation of Lithuania an impossibility. The crowning achievement in that effort was Lithuania's admission to NATO.
Do you worry that the Obama administration might sacrifice the Baltic States in order to improve relations with Russia? I do. It's not that far-fetched. Need evidence? Read Enlarging NATO, Expanding Confusion in today's New York Times. No, the article doesn't call for abandonment of the Baltic States, that wouldn't be the first step anyway. Rather, the article is a defense of Russia's "legitimate grievances" over NATO expansion.
That's how it starts.
Lithuanian-Americans should fight back against such nonsense, beginning today.
